The delay could be due to DNS lookup, but then it seems to crash with an X error.
I haven't seen it (or any other GTK app) die like that. Could you send me a 
backtrace from the core dump:

gdb bezerk core
(gdb) bt

Could you also tell me which IRC server you're using, in case it's doing something funny.
