How to make a window iconic?

Hello
sorry for such a basic question, but I can't manage to make a window
iconic: I have a small application with a few windows, and at
startup I would like to have some of them in icon form.

After the window creation, I tried some gdk_window_unmap, but without
any
visual effect. With gtk_widget_hide, only parts of the window
disappear. I'm using gtk 1.0.
