On the subject of GC. I recently sat in on a session at SD97, where someone
claimed they linked
in a GC w/ Netscape and found major memory bleed. On further investigation they
found the
bleed came from the X11 implementation of a commercial Unix (they didn't mention
which platform).
You may be interested in the Boehm-Demers-Weiser conservative garbage collector.
(see http://reality.sgi.com/employees/boehm_mti/gc.html) It provides drop-in
replacements
for malloc/free, is thread-safe, and Berkeley-style licensed.
