Filtering in File Selection

Hello

I searched the mail archives and found this question raised a couple of
times
but never answered:

Has anyone tried to modify the file selection widget to add a filtering 
capability?  Should this be added to the default widget?  I might take
a swing at it, but I'd hate to get started and learn I'm reinventing
the wheel.
