Pango's modules.cache file

Can someone please explain the role of the modules.cache file for
Pango functionality? I cannot find any documentation of these cache
files (apologies if I missed something). Removing the file doesn't
seem to affect the functionality in any way, so I'm wondering why and
when is this file needed.
