Hi Hadmut,
This is quite interesting.
I think there is need for test cases to demonstrate these kerning
issues, especially with other fonts.
You may file bug reports in GNOME Bugzilla, under product "pango" (is
that right?).

In the test case, it's good to include
* font name
* pango version
* fontconfig version
* screenshot

It would be good to use the most recent versions of the libraries. For
Linux, Ubuntu Dapper or Fedora Core 5 should be ok.
