Thanks for your help.  Unfortunately the patch you provided did not
solve the problem, make still fails with the same error messages.

I was trying to build pango 1.8.0 as this is listed on the FTP site as
the latest stable version.  Today I tried version 1.8.1 and it appeared
to build without any problems.
