Pango doesn't use font servers (I think). Check /etc/fonts/fonts.conf and the
font directories should be listed there like
<dir>/usr/share/fonts</dir>
and so on.
This is independent of the X configuration and all those "ttmkfdir" and stuff
are not necessary (I think so but I am not sure you see). I think you're
supposed to add custom stuff to /etc/fonts/local.conf, though. I really hope
what I am saying is not distro specific and is true.
