You need to either downgrade to freetype-2.0.9 or use Pango from
anoncvs (http://developer.gnome.org/tools/cvs.html, module cvs)

Considering how often I'm answering this question, there will 
probably be a pango-1.0.2 out pretty soon with the compat fixes.
