Switching to the ft2 backend seems to be a huge step backwards for the 
windows backend. Having the same fonts and rendering as other win32 apps 
is really important, and the windows rendering is probably a lot faster.

What would be really cool is if someone wrote a pango shaper for win32 
based on uniscribe. That would immediately support a load of scripts.
