I am not sure if I am right or not..
In a pure gtk program.
1. put gtk_set_locale() BEFORE gtk_init()
2. use gdk_fontset_load() instead of gdk_font_load()
In a pure X program
3. remember to register XRegisterIMInstantiateCallback()
4. use XmbDrawImageString() or XwcDrawImageString()
