There are lots of use cases for file systems, and while ignoring a standard for efficiency reasons is often a good move, it's also a good move to make that optional.
Especially since mime type guessing isn't always right, and can do some crazy things like causing nautilus to try and render an executable as a PNG.
Seems like that this should be some gtk configurable setting... (ignore user.mime_type), on by default for backward compatibility and efficiency.
Coded up as an optional setting of some kind, I can't see any reasonable objection.
