Also, what about Gnome/Gtk+-based applications on alternative desktop 
environments (XFCE, KDE) ? Would the client application also fall back 
to the existing dbus API ?

Shouldn't the existing API be evolved to meed the current requirements 
instead of creating a new, private, API ?
