+1. I am using the rulers in my apps too, but find them not too flexible.
Couldn't we colelct the needs and improve it, instead of killing it. If that
would be a viable option, I'll start with a patch for

Featurewise, I would assume that most people need:
- more influence on the ticks/subticks
- maybe a mapping callback (to do log scales).
