Thanks for your response. I downloaded the earlier version of GTK+ -
1.12.0 - and tried to build this with DirectFB support.
But this time I get the following error:

Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Am I missing some additional libraries
that are needed to build the GTK+ libraries?

Support for DirectFB in recent GTK+ releases is broken: IIRC GTK+ 2.12 
is the latest release with a working DirectFB backend.
BTW, you may want to resort to the precompiled binaries for ARM which 
can be found in the debian repositories.
