I think it's safe to say that Gtk+ has settled on a once-a-year release
schedule where glib can use more regular releases, for one reason
because its such a low level library for the entire platform.

Personally I don't buy that there's any gain in skipping version numbers
and syncing them.  It adds more confusion IMO without solving much.
