I believe there's a more formal document on fd.o about how the
clipboard/primary selections should behave, but that's a nice
easy-to-read document that does a good job explaining.
It's not really gtk that's in the wrong here - IMHO mozilla/firefox is
buggy.
(I didn't really read the bug you pointed to, so this may have already
been discussed. Seems like you're asking for an "unbreak my setup"
configuration option, which is IMO a waste of time and the absolute
wrong way to approach the problem.)
