May be or not be interesting depending on what you want to do:

Thanks, but that's a rather different problem. The issue here is really
a question of what's the best way to do it rather than one of implementation.

Libtool 1.5.2 is supposed to support -export-symbol* under linux[1] so
this might be the best way forward. I'm still making my own mind up
never mind trying to persuade anyone else :-)
