If you look at Thomas's spec, it basically does compilation
of the magic patterns into a binary format ... that is, I
think, what he was asking about.

OK, shouldn't run my mouth off like that. My main complaint about
GNOME VFS's MIME handling is that I've always had extreme
trouble configuring it when I've tried to do so from a user
perspective. But that might just be bad UI / bad docs / stupid
user.
Well, and the fact that gnome-vfs has a publically exported API
for editing the MIME database is whacky and a mistake. But
we can just make that a no-op if we need to.
