Trouble compiling Pango (Gnome 2b4)

Howdy, folks. I needed to do something supremely geeky, so I though
I would download and compile Gnome 2b4. Well, that was going fine
until I stumbled to the point of trying to compile pango.
That gave me a problem that I don't think it should have given me.
The configure ran fine, so I started the compile with 'make'. A bit
into the compile, I got this error message:
+++++ BEGIN PANGO COMPILE ERROR +++++

Cna someone here please help me out, here? It seems to me that Gnome
2b4 really SHOULD just compile out of the "box". Nothing
particularly funny about my system - it is just a Debian testing
install with NO gnome packages installed.
So far, before this, I had gotten pkgconfig, glib, atk, and intltool
compiled and installed with no problem.
Thanks for the space on this list. And help please!!! :)
