Hi there,
Just in case anyone is suffering the same thing; my font setup got
unutterably borked and kept spewing the above message, the following steps
fixed it for me ( thanks to Alex ):
rm ${prefix}/lib/pango/modules/pango-basic*
pango-querymodules > ${prefix}/etc/pango/pango.modules
