I'm assuming you meant gtk-devel-list, so moving your post here.

It looks likely that for multidisplay we'll only get the basic hooks
in GTK 2, though I haven't seen the full implementation so maybe we
could do more. We are thinking of going through the 90 or so open API
bugs today and punting a solid 50% of them if possible. We have to get
this thing out the door or GNOME 2 will be delayed. GNOME 2 might get
delayed anyway, but it isn't going to be our fault. ;-)

Punting this stuff should leave us with only a few weeks of work left
before an API freeze. The API freeze won't be super pedantic, i.e. if
we need to add an extra function argument or something for good reason
it will probably happen, but no new features or whole new APIs will go
in.

The next release is likely to be a GTK 2.2 which is bin/source
compatible and adds some features, likely: file selector replacement,
multidisplay, maybe full accessibility API if we end up needing more
than the hooks in GTK 2, a couple other widgets, or maybe even a menu
API though that's tricky. This release might even ship with GNOME 2,
but GNOME 2 wouldn't be using any of the features since they'd go in
right before the ship date.

However, GTK 2.2 may or may not happen, that is up in the air and
depends on a lot of factors, including what resources we can get and
what various people want to see.

But, if we do a 2.2, that will be a chance to get GTK features in
GNOME 2. The only limitation is that the hooks you need to do the
feature bin/source compatibly would have to go in now, because we
can't release another bin/source incompatible GTK in that short
timeframe.
