I think it's much simpler to just use an automake pre-release off it's
"stable" branch.

  ftp://sources.redhat.com/pub/automake/automake-1.4l.tar.gz

It has pretty good support for dependency handling for non-GCC
compilers.  --include-deps is obsolete.
