[slightly off-topic]

Using $(datadir) is a bad idea for something that purports to carry
configure information.  Configuration-dependendent stuff should go
into $exec_prefix -- $libdir is currently used, and someone else
suggested $libexecdir so as not to clutter up $libdir.
