1) I'd like to include the (already implemented) 
virtual-drawable patch (the postscript and the
metafile backend could be distributed separately, but I think
it would be nicer to include the postscript support in the core
library).
2) A related work would be the plug-in font system: this was discussed a 
while ago, but never implemented AFAIK (all of the dicussions stopped
on the issue of font naming:-). I may have a go with that.
3) A minor enhancement is a combo that supports CLists and Ctrees.

I do not expect any source incompatibilities at the normal
application level:
1) requires changes to some private data structures and api additions.
2) the old X font convention will be the default.
3) the combo with a CList will use a different constructor.
