Run time loading

Sorry for the newbie question, but can someone explain how to run-time
load libgtk.so?

I keep getting load failures because gdk_root_window is not defined.

I am trying to build a Smalltalk Squeak GTK API and I don't want to
link the GTK library. I don't have control of the Squeak C code, so it
is much easier to do run-time loading with dlopen.
