Give this a try. It creates a surface, draws on it and then returns the surface so that it can be put in an 
image widget.

        image.set_from_surface(surface)
        image.set_vexpand(True)
        image.set_hexpand(True)

        grid = Gtk.Grid()
        grid.attach(image, 0, 0, 1, 1)
        self.add(grid)

    def get_surface(self):
        surface = cairo.ImageSurface(cairo.FORMAT_ARGB32, 200, 200)
        cr = cairo.Context(surface)
        
        cr.set_source_rgb(0.8, 0.8, 0.8)
        cr.paint()

        cr.set_source_rgb(0.0, 1.0, 0.0)
        cr.set_line_width(6)
        cr.rectangle(0, 0, 200.0, 200.0) 
        cr.stroke()

And I can not see any text/string drawing methods in the surface class.
