you should probably send this to gtk-devel-list, not gtk-app-devel-list.

also, you may want to file a bug asking for having
`--include-image-data` by default, and add a
`--no-include-image-data`.

it's not really experimentation: it's a case of trying to keep the
pain of the gtk2/gtk3 split to a minimum when packaging releases.

cross-compilation is still a valid use case, tho, so feel free to file
bugs when that breaks.
