gnome applets

I used the tutorial to create gnome applets using gtk+ availabe at the
following link:
http://projects.gnome.org/ORBit2/appletstutorial.html
However even after i followed the same procedure it didnt work and gave an
error:
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:ExampleApplet".
any suggestions as to why it isn't working?
