I would do it like this, but sorry i haven't got time
to confirm it would work.

}

    val = (100.0 /SOME_NUMBER)* i /100.0;
    g_idle_add(show_bar_idle_cb, INT_TO_POINT(val));
 } 

Using timeouts can work too, if G_PRIORITY_HIGH is
used. 
Ok, it's just my 2 cents. I used this in my
application before and it worked. Hope it helps
