I want to send a signal to a GtkDrawingarea to call it re-draw its contents

gtk_signal_emit_by_name(drawingarea1,"expose_event");
You have to pass all arguments the signal handler takes:
http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/2.0/gtk/GtkWidget.html#GtkWidget-expose-event
Anyway, this is the wrong method to redraw a widget, use
gtk_widget_queue_draw().
