Never mind..
I've solved the problem simply by adding:

if GTK_IS_RADIO_MENU_ITEM(widget) {
        if (!gtk_check_menu_item_get_active(GTK_CHECK_MENU_ITEM(widget))) return;
}

to the top of my callback function...

perhaps not the best way to do it, but it works. ;-)
