The only way you could do it is to embed the gecko (Mozilla) rendering
engine into your app or duplicate the plugin API. There is a widget (I
think it is called mozembed) to do this.

by button clicks. (Click a button, a flash animation appears in a box in
the same window, stuff like that.) I've checked out swfdec, but apparently
it has problems supporting interactivity, and that's something we need. If
I have to go through some other libraries to do it (like rendering it to
an OpenGL context and stuffing it into a GtkDrawArea) that would work,
