Stock icons

Hello. I'm trying to write a small GNOME 2.6 app, but I have a question.
How the stock icons mechanism works? For example I have
a /usr/share/icons/hicolor/24x24/stock/media/stock_media-play.png file
from Hicolor icon theme, how can I use this "media-play" icon w/o
specifying exact path? (to keep "themeability")? Thanks.
