gtk tree view index of node

Hi,

I'm looking for a way to get a flat index of any node in a gtk tree 
view.  For example, in the following structure:

1. Birds
   1.1 colorful birds
2. Dogs
   2.1 little dogs
   2.2 big dogs

item 2.2 would have a value of 5.

I didn't see anything in the API .. does anyone know if such a function 
exists, or what would be a fast way to calculate this?
