Background under high level GtkWindow

Help,

Ive been converting an MSBasic app from MSWindows to Gtk Linux.  Im having
no
success at getting anything close to an image behind the various widgets in
the window.
I understand that at the lowest level a GdkWindow can have a bitmap, but
this does not
address the problem of having a "global" bitmap underneath all displayed
widgets on the
high level GtkWindow.

Is this not possible?

Please help.  I have to find a development environment that supports this.
