How to simulate a keyboard input by emitting an event

Hi

i want so simulate a keyboard input normaly done by typing to an entry 
widget.
I dont want to use the   gtk_entry_append_text function call to insert
text.
The application should work like keyboard input
how can I setup a  gtk_signal_emit_by_name for keypress or keyrelease
and how to tell the call the  character I want to send.
Have I to seup an event struct before filling with the character I want.
It would be nice to send a code example
