I'm trying this method, but the problem with 'scp' is it doesn't read
from standard file descriptors (especially when asked for password). It
attaches directly to the tty. 

Is there a more pure way to handle this, other than using 'expect' ?

Have you tried using the -B (batch) option to scp?
