getting TryeType font filename

Is there any way via pango or fontconfig to get the actual filename of
a font from a pango description?

I ask because I'm trying to set up a gtk2 font selector for gnuplot +
libgd.  The handling of fonts by libgd is very low-level: it needs a
filename, so for example "Bitstream Vera Sans" is no good if the
relevant file is named Vera.ttf.
