How to find GtkMenuItems in a GtkItemFactory?

I have created a menu of GtkCheckMenuItems using GtkItemFactory, and I 
want to go back and change the state of some items.  Of course I need a 
GtkWidget* to do that, and I don't know how to retrieve these pointers 
from the finished GtkItemFactory.  Any suggestions?
