call an external program and save or show output

Hello !

Could anybody say how to call an external program (like gcc/g++ or nmap) ?
For example when I write a program that scans a host and I want to run nmap and show (and/or save ...) the 
output in a new widget. Is there a possibility ?

And I don't want to use the system() function :)
