color_alloc failure on win32?

A user of my gtk program has reported an error I haven't heard of
before: the program aborts with something like:

"GDK.Error** File gdkcolor-win32
C: Line 356 (alloc_color)
Should not be reached
Abort"

Any notions on what could trigger this?  My program does not do
anything particularly fancy with colors.
