Take a look at Emacs. Yes it is huge, but it has some nice
concepts of files, buffers and frames. Basicaly the information
is in a buffer. That buffer can be viewd in many frames and a frame
can be on some X-server display. Not only localy but also remotly.
The information can then be bound to a file.
This is quite something different than MDI...
