gtk and animations

Hello 

I want to make animations in a GTK application, and I want them to be as 
smooth and fast as possible. Is there any speed difference between 
GtkPixmap and GtkDrawingArea (gtk+ 1.2) ? If anyone as any idea about fast 
animations, I would be pleased to heard about it (gtk+ 1.2 or 2.0).
