Resizable GtkDrawingArea

Hello,

I'm creating a GtkDrawingArea which should be displayed in a specific
initial size.  It should the be resizeable by the user (by changing
the size of the window.)  It should be possible to resize the
GtkDrawingArea to a smaller or to a bigger size.  The widget will be
inside a GtkHBox. 

Is GtkDrawingArea the right widget for this?  If yes then, how can it
be made resizeable?  If not, then which widget should be used.

Solutions that work with GTK+ 1.2 preferred.
