Custom images

Hi,

I want to use some custom images as icons for buttons.  Is there a standard 
way of doing this? ie.  Where do I put the images in the filesystem, can I 
reference them by name or do I have to use a full path, etc...

I have looked, but I cannot find a decent tutorial including this sort of 
thing.
