prefered way for gtk-1.2 and gtk-2.0 to coexist?

is there a prefered way for gtk-1.2.* and gtk-2.* to both be installed at
once to ease the transition?  

it looks like most files are installed in version specific directories,
$prefix/include/glib/glib-1.2/ for example, but a few aren't like
$prefix/bin/gtk-config
