filename completion

Does something akin to g_path_full exist in gtk/glib/gnome yet?
I can't find anything in GTK 1.2 or 2.0 that seems to do this.

There has been a suggestion long ago about this:

And since then there have been a number of other posts to the various
lists on this topic as well.

I just want to be able to feed in something like

  ~user/data/file or ~/data/file

and get back

  /usr/people/user/data/file
