Background/Canvas colour

Hi all,

I'am new to GTK (and even Linux).

1) I want to know i can change the colour of the X-server background
(canvas?).
2) Is it possible to have keyboard-events when no GTK-Windows are shown?

This concerns an embedded application; I welcome solutions which do not
require a large library to do this.
