Font loading & Freetype 2

Hi, 

I'm using freetype 2 to render fonts in opengl in gtk (with gtkglarea),
But freetype loads fonts upon filename... but I need to use  X Logical Font Description Conventions 
("-b&h-lucida-bold-i-normal-sans-34-240-100-100-p-215-iso8859-*" font string description ).

Is there a way of getting font in memory or font filename & filepath with  gtk (1.2.10)
If not, can someone point me to a way to do It ?
Pango & gtk 2 seems to use freetype 2, so, how they do load fonts ?
